Profile

The department of Tamil established in 1979, offers B.A.Tamil as an undergraduate programmme under the aided section. Part I Tamil is offered for the first year and second year undergraduate students, to make them understand and internalize the importance of Tamil which is an ancient classical language existing in both the oral and written forms. It is one of the earliest languages that is recognized as ‘Semmozhi’ among the world languages. Tamil literature is a compendium of Bhakthi life style, modern science and architecture.

Goals

To create an awareness about the richness of the Tamil literature and grammar
To impart the historical importance and contemporary relevance of Tamil culture and heritage
To impart value based education through Tamil literature
To enhance the employability skills of the students

Objectives

To teach Tamil literature and grammar from Sangam literature to Modern Age
To create social awareness by including papers on Feminism and Human Rights
To Include papers to enhance employability skills
To enrich general knowledge and to develop creativity

On behalf of the Bharathiyar (Mandram) Forum, a speech competition on the topic “Aanukku Pen Elaippillai” was held on 21.09.2023
The 127^thbirth anniversary celebration of Padma Bhushan N. Ramaswami Iyer was held on 25.09.2023 with an inter-college Tamil speech competition on the topic “Pengalin Paadhukappu Pengalidama? Samoogathidama?”
An international level Faculty development programme was conducted online on the theme “Elakkiyathil Aram” from 25.09.2023 to 29.09.2023
With the financial support of the Central Institute of Classical Tamil, organized a speech competition on the topic “Paarukkullay Nalla Naadu-Bharatha Naadu” on 11.12.2023, in celebration of Bharathiyar’s birthday
In celebration of World Translation Day, an international one-day translation workshop on the topic “Mozhipeyarppiyal” was held on 12.12.2023

More than hundred students from the Tamil Department enthusiastically participated in the exercise of translating songs from other language in Translation workshop.
On behalf of the Bharathidasan Mandram, a quiz competition was held on 14.12.2023. Students participated in four teams.
